F&ME Consultants Projects
Geotechnical Environmental
Materials Geophysical
At F&ME, our projects are the backbone of our organization. Small or large, we recognize that each project is huge
to our client. Represented here is a cross section of recent projects of which we are especially proud.
F&ME Geotechnical Projects
Limehouse Bridge Replacement, Charleston County, S. C.
When completed, the Limehouse Bridge will provide access from the South Carolina
mainland to Johns Island, Kiawah, and Seabrook. The bridge will replace an existing swing bridge and improve traffic flow
considerably to the islands. Designed by Ralph Whitehead Associates of Charlotte, NC and constructed by Jones Bros., Inc.
of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, the bridge will span the Stono River at the Main Road crossing.
As a sub consultant to the grading contractor, Banks Construction of North Charleston, SC, F&ME has provided geotechnical
engineering and construction monitoring of the bridge approaches constructed over typical low country soils.
Ground modification has included Vibro-compacted stone columns and the extensive use of geogrid and MSE walls.
By extending the embankments to eliminate bridge end bents, savings in excess of one million dollars has been realized by
the SCDOT.
F&ME Environmental Projects
Statewide Asbestos Survey Program- Phase IV, Statewide, SC
F&ME Consultants was chosen from 26 applicants to perform
AHERA level Asbestos surveys on 3,990 state owned facilities totaling 11,094,000 square feet. The project scope included
coordinating access, as-built drawings and previous asbestos inspections with 46 state agencies for buildings in every
county in the state.
Work tasks consisted of asbestos identification, bulk sampling in accordance with EPA guidelines,
laboratory analysis, CAD generated sample location plans, delineation of the asbestos containing building materials,
recommendations for the disposition of the ACM dependent on site conditional assessment and cost estimating for removal,
disposal and replacement.
The project schedule allowed 24 months for completion. At this time we anticipate utilizing
20 months of the original schedule.
Demolition of Selected Sites- CSC Savannah ANG Base, Savannah, GA
The Savannah Air National Guard Command has been an integral part of our country's defenses in Grenada, the Gulf war and
most recently the conflict in Afghanistan.
F&ME has had the opportunity to work with the Savannah ANG since the early
90’s. Our most recent project consisted of preparing plans and specifications for the removal and disposal of asbestos
containing building materials and materials painted with lead-based paint. This project was also selected as a model for
environmental concerns as they relate to land fills.
F&ME assisted the ANG with their objective for this project: that 60% of demolished construction materials be re-cycled.
This objective appears to be obtainable.

Radisson Addition to the Myrtle Beach Convention Center,
Myrtle Beach, SC
When completed,
this 12-story hotel addition to the Myrtle Beach Convention Center will greatly enhance the city’s ability to entice major
conventions to Myrtle Beach. Designed by Pegram Associates of Myrtle Beach, SC, the architecture compliments the
existing convention center. The hotel will have 404 guest rooms, a 250-seat restaurant, indoor pool, and exercise room.
Constructed on a “fast-track” schedule, Welbro Constructors, the project’s general contractor, plans to complete the
project in less than 17 months. An attached 6-story parking garage is also included in this project.
F&ME has
provided construction materials testing for the project. Services have included inspection of the auger cast pile
foundation, concrete, and structural steel. In order to comply with the tight construction schedule, many early
morning concrete placements and two-day concrete cylinder breaks were required.
Harrelson Boulevard, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Harrelson Boulevard, opened in March 2002, replaced Jetport Road and became the main entrance to the Myrtle Beach
International Airport.
Together with the Fantasy Harbour Interchange, located on U.S. Highway 17 Bypass, Harrelson Boulevard becomes
the main focal point for visitors entering Myrtle Beach from the south. Designed by Parsons Brinkerhoff of
Raleigh, NC and The LPA Group of Columbia, SC, the roadway consists of approximately 4,000 feet of 4-lane
divided urban section. The design has been coordinated with the new Grissom Parkway to provide an inviting
and consistent route through Myrtle Beach.
During construction,
F&ME represented the City of Myrtle Beach and provided construction materials testing services as well as
construction administration. F&ME monitored construction, reviewed pay requests, and authorized change orders.
The project was completed on time and under budget, even considering a two-month construction delay.
Strom Thurmond Fitness and Wellness Center, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC
Designed by the Boudreaux Group architects of Columbia, SC and constructed by EllisDon of London, Ontario, Canada,
the 192,000 square foot fitness facility will be ready for student activity in the spring of 2003.
Combining the traditional features of both a student union and recreational facility, the structure
is destined to become a focal point of the university in activity and architectural style.
When completed,
the facility will house indoor and outdoor pools, volleyball and basketball courts, a climbing wall, an indoor track,
and other activities too numerous to mention.
As the University’s representative,
F&ME has provided construction materials testing services for the project. From foundation installation to concrete,
soil, and steel testing, F&ME has provided thorough and responsive services to the project.
